John
Clayton Mayer was born October 16, 1977 in Bridgeport and raised in Fairfield, Connecticut, the second of three brothers. His mother was and English teacher,
his father a high-school principal. At age 13, he was captivated by a Stevie Ray
Vaughan tape, picked up a guitar, and within a couple of years was playing the
local blues clubs. After high school graduation, John enrolled in Boston's
Berklee School of Music but soon dropped out and moved to Atlanta on the advice
of a friend who lived there. He was highly acclaimed by the local press, but
gained national attention in 2000 with a performance at the South by Southwest
Music Conference. Courted by several record labels, he signed with
Aware/Columbia Records. His first album, "Room for Squares" debuted in
2001.
