About Kate Winslet
Kate
Elizabeth Winslet was born October 5, 1975 in Reading, Berkshire, United Kingdom
to stage actors Roger and Sally Bridges Winslet. Her first job was in a kids'
cereal commercial dancing opposite the Honey Monster. While attending a
performing arts high school, she worked steadily on stage and in television. Her
first break came at age 17 when she was cast in the film "Heavenly
Creatures," for which she received critical acclaim. She then caught the
eye of actress Emma Thompson while auditioning for "Sense and
Sensibility" and was cast as Thompson's onscreen sister Marianne Dashwood,
a performance that garnered an Oscar nomination. Kate was launched into
international stardom with her performance of Rose, opposite Leonardo DiCaprio,
in "Titanic," for which she received a best actress nomination, making
her the youngest actress ever to receive two Academy nods. Kate married film
director James Threapleton in 1998. The two had a daughter, Mia, but divorced in
2001. Kate married director Sam Mendes in 2003. The couple has a son, Joe, and
divide their time between homes in London and New York. In March, 2010 Kate
announced that she and Sam Mendes were separating after seven years of marriage.
