About Nelly
Cornell
Haynes, Jr. was born on November 2, 1978, in Austin, Texas. He moved around a
lot as a child, including a move to Spain with his Air Force father. His parents
split up when he was seven, and Nelly and his mother eventually settled in St.
Louis. A talented ball player, Nelly considered a career in sports, but was
drawn to the world of rap, where his rhyming skills earned him considerable
respect in his neighborhood. He formed the St. Lunatics while still in high
school and garnered local attention with the 1996 single "Gimme What Ya
Got." Nelly eventually signed with Universal Records and released the
chart-topping single "Country Grammar." His second album, "Nellyville,"
became one of the most successful rap albums of all time. Nelly has a daughter,
Chanel, and a son, Cornell III, known as Tre. He also has his own clothing line,
Vokal. He appeared in the 2005 movie The
Longest Yard.
