Tom Cruise's fiancée Katie Holmes had an epidural to ease her pain when she gave birth to the couple's daughter Suri on Tuesday (18APR06).

It is not yet known whether the former Dawson's Creek actress adhered to Scientology protocol by remaining silent during labor, but she did accept pain relief, according to American magazine People.

A source told the publication that Holmes' mother Kathy broke down in tears of joy when she heard the news of her granddaughter's safe delivery.
