American
Idol - Nine Singers Singing 4/4/07
American
Idol, April 3, 2007
By Marcus
Last season the best coach for the idol contestants was Tony Bennett
And tonight it is both their and our privilege to again listen to his
musical insight and staging suggestions. Tony has been entertaining since
he was just a kid and he initially broke into the business with his first
number one hit “Because of You” in 1951. For over a half century this
incredible personality has provided his audiences with delightful
listening pleasure. It makes me ponder whether or not any of the idol
contestants from any season will have the star power and the staying power
of Tony Bennett.
Tonight the 9 hopefuls compete against one another and tomorrow night
someone will be sent home with dreams dashed. And before you vote, here is
my recap just for you.
First up was cool Blake Lewis singing “Mac the Knife.” When sung
properly this song cuts deeply and leaves a trail of blood. And when sung
properly, it also leaves an unsettling memory. But Blake did not leave
such an impression and even his scat ending was dull and swallowed.
Next we had Phil Stacey singing “Night and Day” which is a
passionate bouquet for lovers. Well, after hearing his depressing
rendition, those lovers just separated and are talking to lawyers. Sure he
could sing it on a cruise ship and the audience would respectfully
applaud, but he is not an American Idol. I think that Phil will be packing
his suitcase and heading back home to his wife.
But when Melinda Doolittle belted “You Got Rhythm” we finally heard
a polished performer. Her voice projects a full range of emotions that
keeps our fingers snapping and our toes tapping.
Chris Richardson swallowed some of his lyrics of “Don’t Get Around
Much Anymore” and that suggested he was not prepared. He needs to really
focus on his rehearsals and improve his product.
Jordin Sparks creatively sang “On a Clear Day” and her singing
brought us baby blue skies, soft western winds and a sunny easy warmth.
She is definitely in this contest to win.
Gina Glocksen sang “Smile.” This song was created to chase away the
blues, to conquer loss, and to give us a second chance in life’s toils.
Did she achieve that intent?
Absolutely and with her soft presentation she gave us a feeling that
tomorrow there will be hope.
Greasing his hair with a two or more tubes of Brilcream (I guess he
never heard that a little dab will do you), Sanjaya Malakar entertained us
but he cannot sing. In fact when he was singing “”Dancing Cheek to
Cheek” I just wanted to swat him a couple times on his backside cheeks.
Go entertain in some clubs, Sanjaya, but an American Idol you are not.
Wearing a St Patrick’s Day sequined green gown with a plunging
neckline that revealed almost all there is to the attractive Haley
Scarnato, her dress really didn’t take away from her delightful
performance of “Ain’t Misbehaving.” She is also way ahead of many of
the others with her use of stage command and audience eye contact.
Last up and singing “Stormy Weather” was LaKisha Jones whose earth
tone formal also revealed a lot of her womanly attributes. Her start was
shaky but her ending was strong enough to make us forget her earlier
troubles.
And there you have it. The remaining nine singers hoping that they will
be back next week. For whom are you voting? Return here tomorrow for the
voting results and my recap that is written especially for you.
