Idol - Eight Singers Singing 4/11/07
American Idol - April 10, 2007
“Eight Singers Singing”
By Marcus
The tension continues to build as only 8 contestants are left in this
season’s American Idol. And after this evening’s performance, someone
will be given a one way ticket home. We are now getting down to the final
stage presentations and each singer must not only perform well but also
must provide us with a certain shine that makes us want to bring ‘em
back for next weeks competition.
Tonight was billed as Latin Night with sultry Jennifer Lopez providing
star mentoring to the hopeful eight. And to help you with your voting,
here is the recap:
First up was Melinda Doolittle who immediately had us swaying with her
song from start to finish. Although that finish was not her best, it was
again a solid entertaining performance.
Next up was LaKisha Jones who has a fantastic voice. But her almost
forced and static dancing looked so uncomfortable and so very unnatural
for her, that the dance eroded our appreciation of her voice. She needs to
practice on dancing and becoming at ease with her body. And then she will
be a major force on stage.
Chris Richardson also seemed uncomfortable with the Latin beat. Flanked
on stage by a guitarist and drummer, those two musicians literally
upstaged him. This was not Chris’ best attempt but certainly it was good
enough for him to return next week.
Haley Scarnato reminded me of a 19th century Gatling Gun, rattling and
blasting about without any true aim. And at times her words were
incredibly incoherent. But her long legs may carry her further into the
competition, but not much further.
Phil Stacey sang as if he was gargling acorns. He simply could not keep
the song on track. It was a poor and at this point in the game, a very
unskilled performance. Tonight he may have sealed his purchase for a one
way ticket back home.
Then after those above lackluster routines, Blake Lewis stole the stage
with his performance. He was focused, comfortable and made us feel the
emotions of his words. He connected directly with the audience and he is
back into this competition big time.
Last up was Sanjaya Malakar who ended the program with what was without
question his best personal performance. He still exhibits a limited vocal
range that becomes more evident each time he sings, but tonight his sweet
ballad very much surprised me.
And there you have it. A recap to help you in your voting decision.
Return here tomorrow night to find out who is sent packing.
