Sandra Bullock & Husband Unhurt After Drunk Driver Crash  4/21/08

Hollywood actress Sandra Bullock and her husband Jesse James escaped serious injury after their car was hit by a suspected drunk driver on Friday night (18Apr08).

The couple was being driven home in a private vehicle in Gloucester, Massachusetts, at around 9.50pm when they were struck head on by a grey Subaru station wagon.

The Subaru is reported to have switched lanes and smashed into the front of Bullock's car. No injuries were reported.

Police attending the scene identified the Subaru driver as Lucille P. Gatchell, from Gloucester, who was arrested after failing a sobriety test.

Gatchell allegedly had two and a half times the legal alcohol limit in her system. She was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and failure to stay in marked lanes.

The 64-year-old was released and is expected to face arraignment on Tuesday (22Apr08).

Gloucester Police Lieutenant Gerry Cook insists Bullock and her husband were lucky to escape unscathed.

He tells People Magazine, "They were shaken up, needless to say. But they were fine - he was hugging her. Jess and Sandra were hugging. They said they were fine, they didn't need medical attention. There were quite a few people snapping pictures of them.

"It's unfortunate. But it shows you that no one is immune from drunk drivers, no matter how famous you are."

Bullock is in the area filming romantic comedy The Proposal with Ryan Reynolds.
