Lauren Bacall Slams Tom Cruise's Shocking Vulgar Behavior  8/1/05

Screen legend Lauren Bacall has brandishing Tom Cruise's public declarations of love for fiancée Katie Holmes as "shocking" and "vulgar".

The Big Sleep actress, 80, was amazed by the movie hunk's antics on The Oprah Winfrey Show in May (05), when the Minority Report star leapt over furniture and pounded the floor with his fist shouting, "I'm in love".

Cruise and Holmes have been photographed kissing and cuddling on red carpets all over the world as they promote their films Batman Begins and War of the Worlds, and came under fire in June (05) for hosting a press conference to announce their engagement only hours after the actor proposed.

Bacall tells America's Time magazine, "His whole behavior is so shocking.

"It's inappropriate and vulgar and absolutely unacceptable to use your private life to sell anything commercially, but I think it's kind of a sickness."

Bacall, who has co-starred opposite Cruise's ex-wife Nicole Kidman in Birth and Dogville, also took the opportunity to poke fun at the actor's diminutive height of 5 feet 7 inches (1.70 metres).

She smirks, "The word 'great' stands for something. When you talk about a great actor, you're not talking about Tom Cruise."
