David
Beckham Wins Damages Over Nanny Hate Campaign Report
8/3/05
England soccer ace David Beckham has been awarded
"substantial" libel damages over a British tabloid's allegations
he bombarded his children's former nanny with hate phone calls.
The Real Madrid player and wife Victoria Beckham hired Abbie Gibson in
May 2003 to assist in caring for their sons Brooklyn, Rome and Cruz, until
she quit in April (05).
Gibson went on to sell her story to Sunday newspaper News Of The World,
claiming the couple argued all the time and were on the verge of splitting
up.
Last month (JUL05), rival weekend publication The People alleged the
soccer star was bombarding Gibson with vindictive phone calls, under the
headline "England ace plagues ex-nanny with hate calls".
After suing publishers MGN Limited over the story, David triumphed in
the hearing in London's High Court today after The People apologized,
promised to pay damages and would never repeat the allegations.
His solicitor Gerrard Tyrrell says, "These allegations are
completely untrue." |
