Andrew Lloyd Webber refuses to act like Simon Cowell in his new TV talent search - as he insists the pop mogul's harsh approach can "break people's dreams".

The British composer is using reality television to find the star of his new production of The Sound of Music.

And although the show will be similar to American Idol, Lord Lloyd Webber will be treating his hopefuls kindly.

He says, "I won't be doing a Simon Cowell.

"I don't intend to break people's dreams. But this will be a serious contest."
