The
Amazing Race Finale “The Treasure Has Been Claimed” 12/14/05
Amazing Family Race December 13, 2005.
By Marcus
Ten families each with four members initiated the race for the
million dollars. And after thousands of miles, several countries, and too
many cities to remember, we have a winner: the Linz siblings. Their
physical strength and daring pulled them through with the Bransen family a
close second. The Weaver family ended third.
This was a great race. The viewers were exposed to
many wonders of the Americas that will only wet our own adventurous dreams
for travel. However, it would be at a much more leisurely pace. And during
this two-hour finale, we had some interesting moments.
The Linz and the Bransen families seemed to be
helping and encouraging one another while totally and sarcastically
degrading the Weavers. As in all good competition, when the game is over
it is time for the winner and losers to reconcile and acknowledge the
strength of one another. That seemed to have occurred and I hope it was
sincere.
Searching for only three hidden clue boxes among
thousands of seats at the Montreal arena, the Weavers lost their energy.
Climbing hundreds of stairs in a futile search gnawed at their strength
until an exhausted mother Weaver literally collapsed on a cot. Mother the
family dynamo had lost her spark. Had it not been for her only son, Rolly,
attempts to re-energize his worn-out and physically numb family, they may
still be in that stadium, looking and looking. But Rolly challenged his
family to continue the fight for the million. And, my friends, a million
dollars is worth the fight. Rolly again was the family hero when he
climbed the Kajama ship mast ladder docked in Toronto and again when
completed the trapeze catch on the first pass. But they could not make up
for lost time. This family which suffered the lost of husband and father
ended up with preserving his memory with their fierce determination to not
give up.
At the detour decision point to climb the ship's mast
or to shop shoes, the Bransen family chose the latter. I am convinced that
late at night and long after the last customer is gone, the spirit of
Imelda Marcos joyfully roams the displays at Bata Shoe Museum. With
hundreds of pairs available, perhaps she does some ghostly shopping? Among
all these shoes and a hundred barefooted women, the Bransens reminded me
of the Prince in Cinderella. Finishing second, this is another strong
loving family. The daughters have renewed respect for their father and he
can look upon his mature daughters with confidence and pride and
respect.
The winning Linz siblings were like a downhill skier.
They were unstoppable. There was no hesitation to take on the toughest
challenges. When faced with a decision detour, they selected whatever
would be the quickest to accomplish. So confident in their strength and
mutual support, they even took turns to literally carry sister Megan in
her moments of exhaustion. Finishing other than in first place was not in
their vocabulary. With a million dollars reward for their win, they model
all the good qualities of siblings.
Once again, the Amazing Race has been an amazing
program.
