American
Idol February 1st “Where is the Talent in Austin?” 2/1/06
By Marcus
Five thousand tryouts and
only a dozen selected for
Hollywood
. Something was missing in
Austin
and that something was talent.
Here is a brief recap:
Julian the dreamer failed both as a ballet dancer and as a singer.
His attempted “Lemon Tree” was so bad, that he couldn’t even make
lemonade.
Gypsy-looking Paula had a spicy appearance, but her rendition of
“Proud Mary” sunk that paddle wheeler quicker than a torpedo.
And then there was Danielle’s “Amazing Grace.” Her version
was unable to save a single soul.
We finally had a voice and it belonged to embalmer Jason. He may be
the last man to let you down, but his “You Raise Me Up” earned him a
ticket to
Hollywood
.
Stunningly beautiful Cierra the animal doctor sang “O Holy
Night” so badly that the angels flew into hell for cover.
Jittery Allison was so uncoupled with stage fright, that the judges
gave her a 30 minute time out just to compose herself. When the 30 minutes
were over, she sang again with no improvement.
Music Major Randy made his professors proud and he is heading to
Hollywood
.
First singing with open mouth and then with mouth closed (really,
believe me), Ashley the fitting model has the embers of the “it”
factor. She is going to
Hollywood
to sing her heart out and could well be crowned American Idol.
JR the flirting waiter loves older unmarried women almost as much
he adores himself. His “Ain’t No Sunshine” earned him a slot to
Hollywood
.
Kevin, a young look-alike of judge Randy, sang “Hot Sun” but
just did not have the sizzle.
There are times in this show when the sure force of natural talent
grabs you by the collar and demands your attention. A very young 16 year
old William has that talent and he was heard. He is going to
Hollywood
.
And then there are times that you wonder what are these people
doing on stage? Are they kidding themselves? Are they self-deluded? Did
they stop taking their medicines? Have they ever just once sung OUTSIDE of
the shower? Such was the terrible voice of Tessie. All three judges said
“no way” but she remained adamant that they were wrong about her and
she was the next superstar waiting to be discovered. Well, Tessie,
continue waiting.
That’s it for
Texas
. A huge state that produced little singing talent.
