NFL Denies "Phallic Symbolism" in Super Bowl Halftime Show  2/8/07

The American National Football League (NFL) has rubbished reports singer PRINCE brought the Super Bowl halftime show into disrepute, after some critics likened his guitar to a phallic symbol.

The halftime performance at the American football final between the victorious Indianapolis Colts and the Chicago Bears saw the soul singer perform a medley of his hits, but it is his guitar solo during the Purple Rain segment of the show - in which his shadow was projected onto a large white sheet - which has prompted concerns.

However, a spokesman for the NFL - who produced the halftime performance - said the league has received no official complaints.

Greg Aiello tells the New York Daily News, "We respect other opinions, but it takes quite a leap of the imagination to make a controversy of his performance.

It's a guitar."

The 2004 Super Bowl was tarnished by the 'wardrobe malfunction' in Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake's halftime show, which resulted in the All for You star exposing her breast during the live broadcast.
