China
Expresses "Disappointment" Over Steven Spielberg Olympic Pullout
2/14/08
The Chinese government has expressed its "disappointment"
after filmmaker Steven Spielberg quit as artistic advisor to the 2008
Olympic Games in Beijing.
The Oscar winner announced his decision on Tuesday (12Feb08), accusing
China of not doing enough to help end the genocide in the wartorn Darfur
region of Sudan.
On Thursday (14Feb08), China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao
said although he was disappointed by Spielberg's decision, plans for the
Games are running "smoothly".
He added, "We express regret. All preparation work for the Beijing
Olympics is proceeding smoothly. The Chinese people are willing to work
with artists from around the world with wisdom and talent and the Olympic
Games will be a success."
Earlier this week (12Feb08), campaigners including actress Mia Farrow
had sent a letter to China's president via the United Nations, asking him
to sever ties with Sudan - a country that sells China two-thirds of its
oil.
