“Twelve American Idol Men Sing”
February 19, 2008 Episode
By Marcus
It was back to 60’s music when David Hernandez started off the
program. He told us that he sings to overcome his trouble past and tonight
he sang “Midnight Hour.” It was a very lackluster performance with a
nasal ending.
Then Chikezie Eze sang “More Than Yesterday.” But even with his
sparkling eyes and easy disposition, there was no freshness to the song.
It just kind of hung out there like a dish towel on a slack clothesline.
Bartender and self styled musician David Cook was the first to actually
give us some excitement as he rocked “Imagine You And Me.” But it is
too bad that his vocal range is so limited and he had an ending that
collapsed like a punctured balloon.
Perched on a chair, the singing server Jason Yeager dedicated “Moon
River” to his grandmother. It was a pleasant rendition of a classy
dreamy song, but certainly not memorable. He did not stand out.
Singing for ten years and at one time touring with Britney Spears,
Robbie Carrico sang “One Is The Loneliest Number.” His initial
nervousness was evident, but he settled down and recovered. Yet at times,
he was drowned out by his back-ground singers.
And then David Archuleta stepped on stage with a presence that goes far
beyond his seventeen years on earth. He delivered tonight’s best
performance thus far with “My Mama Told Me” without missing a note. He
has the excitement and the freshness of making himself a star.
Unemployed Danny Noriega ripped “Jail House Rock” with a confident
attitude to make the song his own without trying to imitate Elvis. Good
for you, Danny, stay original.
Luke Menard’s weak irritating unexciting voice ruined “Everybody’s
Talking.”
Colton Berry told us that he hums Tele-Tubby songs to calm down. Well
he needed something to spark himself up as he sang a fairly forgettable
version of “Suspicious Minds.” And like Luke before him, both these
singers will quickly be forgotten like yesterday’s fast food lunch.
Garrett Haley’s curly long hair locks were not a sufficient
distraction from his squawk-like tone as he attempted and failed to sing
“Breaking Up Is Hard To Do.” It was like listening to your pre-teen
nephew spontaneously performing at his sister’s wedding.
A very relaxed Jason Castro played his guitar while singing “What A
Day For A Daydream.” It was lovely. It reminded me of summer camp
sing-along’s around the nightly bonfire. All we needed to feel more
content were marshmallows. Jason is a natural singer and entertainer.
Last up was Aussie Michael Johns singing “Light My Fire.” It was
not as exhilarating as I had anticipated from this talented singer. And
for some reason he was not 100% and it showed. He can do so much better
and will undoubtedly return next week.
And so we end the first night of competition and the men now await your
votes.
So, pick up the phone and vote.
Don’t forget to return right here tomorrow night to read the review
of the twelve women contestants.
