American
Idol to Stay on Track With Song Selection Process 1/21/06
In a recent phone interview with the media, American Idol Executive
Producer Nigel Lythgoe was asked whether song choice will be more
restricted this season, forcing singers out of their "comfort
zones." Lythgoe stated that although there would be different genres
and different songwriters to choose from, the categories would remain
broad. Lythgoe said that they would like to keep the music more
contemporary, but the problem is that "there just aren't a lot of
good songs out there right now."
Lythgoe said that the producers do try to mix it up when it comes to
song choice. For instance, they choose great songwriters who have a wide
range of titles. He said they would love to see The Beatles' songs
released. Lythgoe also confirmed that contestants receive help with song
selection - such a vital part of success on Idol - and that contestants
are allowed to change their mind during the week if a song just isn't
working for them. As always, a contestant will be allowed to sing the same
song as another on the same show.
