American
Idol in Miami 1/31/08
January 30, 2008
By Marcus
Baking and shaking under the Miami heat, ten thousand hopefuls tried
out for American Idol. Here is a recap.
First up was Shannon who chops meat in her dad’s butcher shop. She
self revealed that she is also a champion belcher. But her terrible
mumbling of “Cry Baby” failed to impress anyone. So, Belch Queen, it
is back to stew meat for you.
Sweet singing Robbie impressed the judges with “Take Your Time” and
is heading for Hollywood.
Gabel, a multi-talented musician with a heavy accent, sufficiently
impressed the judges to win a ticket. But Paula cautioned him that he
needed to work to lessen the accent distraction.
Then we had the full figured, best girlfriend team of Corliss and
Britney. They were comfortable during their respective songs and they
actually sounded like they were already singing on a Broadway musical
stage. They are both going to Hollywood.
Clearwater resident and single parent Suzanne came to the auditions
after a three year singing hiatus. But her honest pure version of “Lay
Down” won her a golden ticket.
She wants to prove to herself and her young daughter that “mama can
do something special” in life. Well, Suzanne, you now have your chance.
Petite and soft spoken Raniell’s “Natural Woman” was sufficient
to earn her a Hollywood ticket. But I thought it was a little over the top
as if compensating for her diminutive size.
With her dad now off the drugs and booze, Syesha’s song “Think
Freedom” was perhaps her testament about his sobriety. She is heading to
Hollywood and let’s hope that dad continues his recovery work.
Natasha’s blue style arrangement of “My Lonely Day” earned her a
gold ticket.
God certainly did not bless Richard’s attempt at “God Bless The
Broken Road.”
And then we had histrionic Julie who was a former top twenty All
American Junior singer at age 12. Now four years later, she is a snotty,
self-indulged, grandiose child pouting that life is not fair because she
indeed is the next American Idol. Yup, Julie, stump your foot, hold your
breath and wail about the inequities of your life.
Last up was Brandon and his comedy and singing were so bad, both Simon
and Randy left. And so did I.
In all, only 17 won gold tickets during the Miami try outs.
