American Idol runner-up Katharine McPhee is taking a break from her fledgling music career to co-produce a new stage play.

The 22-year-old is working on the drama Red Herring, which tells the story of death row prison inmates, and it is being staged as part of New York City's 10th International Fringe Festival.

She tells MTV, "As soon as I read this play, I knew it was something that I wanted to be a part of.

"Audiences know me best from American Idol but my passion has always been theatre."

The show will run at the Connelly Theatre from 12-26 August (06).
