Tom Cruise Persuades Katie Holmes to Reject Addict Role  6/2/05

Actress Katie Holmes has turned down the role of pop artist Andy Warhol's muse Edie Sedgewick in forthcoming movie Factory Girl - because the character's drug abuse reportedly goes against her boyfriend Tom Cruise's Scientology beliefs. 

Director George Hickenlooper had lunch with Holmes in Los Angeles last month (12MAY05) to discuss the possibility of her replacing Jude Law's fiancee Sienna Miller as Sedgwick, who died of an overdose of barbiturates in 1971. 

But movie insiders claim the 26-year-old beauty decided against starring in the movie because Cruise - who has helped people fight drug addictions through his controversial religion - warned the part would be bad for her image. 

Holmes' confirms, "Katie is not attached to that project." A source tells America's New York Post newspaper, "Edie was in and out of mental institutions and on all sorts of psychotropic drugs. "Tom doesn't believe in those drugs because of his belief in Scientology."
