Bloom: I'll Never Endanger Myself Again
7/1/06
Orlando Bloom has vowed never to put himself in danger
for the sake of a movie, after he nearly died falling from an upstairs
terrace in 1998.
The actor feared he would never walk again after
breaking his back toppling from a friend's three-storey house, and he has
made sure safety came first while filming the latest Pirates of the
Caribbean film.
He says, "I was fearless up until I broke my back,
and it's not like that disappears, but you suddenly realize that it's your
body you're messing with and you have to be careful.
"I was very close to never standing again. I was
close to dying, but the prospect of not being able to walk out of hospital
would terrify anyone into having a new respect for themselves and give
them a new lease of life.
"A movie set is a controlled environment. I'm not
putting myself in danger and if think that I am in danger, then I speak to
the stunt coordinators and tell them it doesn't feel right."
Bloom is the first to admits he's accident-prone. He
once admitted, "I've broken my back, my ribs, my nose, both my legs,
my arm, my wrist, a finger and a toe and cracked my skull three
times."
