Angelina Jolie is relieved boyfriend Brad Pitt entered her life when he did - because her son Maddox finally got a father figure.

The actress adopted the Cambodian kid in 2002 and, after splitting from then-husband Billy Bob Thornton, received sole custody of him. She adopted Ethiopian daughter Zahara in 2005.

After falling pregnant with Brad Pitt's baby later that year, Jolie agreed her new man should legally adopt her two children - a decision she's thrilled she took.

The Tomb Raider star tells the U.S. edition of Marie Claire, "I'm so happy for my children - especially Mad.

"I didn't know if he was ever going to have a dad. So when I watch them having real strong father-son time, or even when Mad tells me, 'This is a boy thing, Mom' - it's just really beautiful to see."

The couple have since adopted Vietnam-born boy Pax Thien.
