Socialite Nicole Richie insists she has no idea why she's famous.

Richie, who is the daughter of soul singer Lionel Richie and regularly features in the gossip columns, is primarily known for starring opposite her friend Paris Hilton on The Simple Life.

But the 25-year-old doesn't understand why she is so well-known.

She tells American magazine Nylon, "I don't have a clue why I'm famous. I didn't make myself famous, you're doing it.

"I think people just want to say, `Oh, she doesn't have a job, she doesn't do anything.' They get off on that. But I do have a job, like everyone else."
