John Travolta Loses Weight as a Woman 6/30/07 John Travolta was delighted to land the role of a woman in movie Hairspray because the costume gave him a unique way to lose weight. The star plays female character Edna Turnblad in the 2007 remake of the iconic musical-turned-movie, and admits having to wear a fat suit, dress and high heels was the perfect combination to shed the pounds. He says, "You certainly sweat some because there's an added level of weight to carry around. "It was very hot inside and I must have lost pounds and pounds."
