American Idol - "Ten Lasses a Singing"  3/1/07

By Marcus

Last week the men had a weak and for the most part an unremarkable performance. But last night they finally showed that they had talent. Now tonight the pressure is on the women because two of them will be packing their bags and singing the blues within 24 hours. Each of tonight’s singers dedicated their song to someone special and here is a recap of what happened.

First up was Gina Glocksen who dedicated her song to her boyfriend, Bill, aka “he is my rock.” Her dress reminded me of a red delicious apple Venetian blind that did absolutely nothing for her figure. But her song did have its impact. She was powerful and grabbed our attention. Sure she was pitchy in spots, but that may be nervousness and with some coaching and breathing relaxation exercises, that problem will be history. Keep at it, Gina but please don’t dress like that again.

Alaina Alexander dedicated her song to her mother who worked four jobs to support the family. Well, Alaina, I really wished you had worked as hard as your mother in your preparation for tonight’s singing. You literally ran out of breath within the first stanza and then you sang flat. What happened? You cannot simply hope that your natural beauty will carry you into the finals because it won’t. You need to get focused and you have to find that focus immediately. You are in trouble, Alaina.

Her 90 year old grandmother received Lakisha Jones dedication. And grandma, you have a powerful and exciting daughter who not only knows how to sing, but how to deliver that song to the audience. Lakisha is like the mountain sunset touching us and leaving us wanting more. Please, do an encore.

Melinda Doolittle dedicated her song to her vocal coach and to her stylist. This gentle and non-assuming woman is a genuine real talent. Period. Her base notes make our bones tremble with excitement and her range and delivery is spot-on. Tonight as she sang, we were exposed to rare treat of finding a superstar with unlimited potential. When she starts booking auditoriums, I will be first in line for the tickets.

Antonella Barba dedicated her song to her musician guitar playing brother. Dressed in a 1960’s outfit that reminded me of vertical green and yellow neon strips, she was flat. She had trouble finding and then holding the high notes. She was not good and is not nearly as talented as several of the above mentioned women. Now I want to address the photos that have been floating around the web. Antonella admits that indeed she is in some of them but as for others, she said that is not her. I want to believe her. But the real story here is the lack of privacy. We all are subject to having ourselves exposed when we allow incriminating photos to be taken. So with all respect, if you do not want your mother or father to see you in a certain pose, then don’t pose for the photo. Okay, enough said and let’s return to the recap.

With eyes tearing, seventeen year old Jordin Sparks dedicated her song to her younger brother, “my best friend.” It is obvious that her emotions were controlling her tonight because she swallowed a few words and never really made a complete recovery. And because I think she is a gifted young singer, it is difficult to share that several of her high notes cracked like cheap crystal. I hope that she makes tonight’s cut because she could be a serious contender.

With her song dedication to her parents to “sing my heart and soul,” Stephanie Edwards sang like she was at a track meet. Not singing at the meet, but running in it. It was a dash. A mad dash that left us just sitting in our seats waiting for it to end. Okay, I will admit that her ending, all 7 seconds of it, was quite good. But overall, she didn’t make the track team and won’t win this competition.

Leslie Hunt dedicated her song to her late grandfather, Bob who loved her unconditionally and was her biggest fan. Leslie started off a little tired and was almost yawning. And then like spring coming to a hibernating bear, she slowly woke up. But without claws. Without hunger. Without a snarl. In other words, she sang okay, but only okay.

Her fiancé Bobby received Haley Scarnato’s dedication. Haley did not wait for us to wake up, but she was the alarm clock buzzer from the very second she touched the stage. She explodes with energy and had us up and dancing. Does she have the best female voice in the competition? No. But she has the power to make us listen and that will carry her far into the finals.

Sabrina Sloan dedicated her song to her 86 year old “granny” who loves hats and flowers. Sabrina has the whole package of a successful singer. She has the looks, the body, the moves, the style, the grace and most importantly she has the passion for singing. When she sings, she is singing to us, not for us, but instead she is singing and connecting directly with the audience. She is a definite contender.

Okay, that is the recap of the ten remaining female vocalists. Two will be packing their bags and makeup and leaving behind hopes and dreams of making it big in Hollywood. Who will be those two? And what happens to the remaining eight? Stay tuned for tomorrow’s decision and my recap written just for you.
