American
Idol - “Eight Lasses Singing” 3/8/07
By Marcus
Last night was a disappointment for fans of American Idol as the vast
majority of the male singers seemed to be anything but ready for the
stage. After beating out tens of thousands of contestants for a shot at
stardom, the men should have wowed us from start to finish. But that was
not the case. In fact with just a few exceptions, last night was about as
exciting as dragging trash to the curb. Let us hope that tonight the women
do much better.
So I listened with a hopeful heart and a tuned ear to their
performances. And now just for you is my recap….
What a great way to start tonight’s gigs with Jordin Sparks'
explosive energy and burning heat. She really had a peak performance and
is easily on her way to the top twelve. If anything can be learned by her
dazzle and focus on winning American Idol, it is, “yo, you male singers,
it is time to WAKE UP or start packing.”
Jordin was a tough act to follow and Sabrina Sloan faltered. Her long
notes were stretched and at times rushed like a swerving car. She actually
sang too loud and almost was shouting. Will she make the final cut?
Probably she is safe for one more week.
Photogenic Antonella Barba could be a fashion model but she is not a
singer. She is gentle on the eyes but her voice grates like some coarse
sandpaper scrapped over chiseled slate. She is in trouble and unless some
of the other women absolutely flop, she will be flying back home tomorrow
evening.
Haley Scarnato’s frequent word quivers bother me. The voice is okay
but not remarkable and probably not profitably sellable. And the ending of
her song collapsed like a soggy Dixie Cup. Haley is bottoming out and may
well join Antonella for the flight back home.
The trademark of Stephanie Edwards is “loudness.” She shouts her
songs to the rafters and that is okay. But it totally distracts from her
personality. It is almost like she is using her roar to scare us into
liking her. And she is very likeable. I just want to see more of her
essence and what makes her sparkle. Stephanie, please sing a little softer
and let us get to know you better.
LaKisha Jones is one of the three female powerhouse singers. Her
natural talent is so incredibly real that we are mesmerized every time she
sings. She is as addictive as sweet Belgium chocolate. She will be in the
final two for American Idol and if she goes against a male competitor, it
will be “goodbye Mr. Man.”
Gina Glocksen is another singer who confuses shouting with talent. But
in her case, she is talented. Yet I think that her heavy rock style will
limit her audience appeal. She exhibited some moments of flatness but she
will easily make tomorrow’s cut. But will she still be here two weeks
from now? Probably not.
The last performer was another powerhouse singer, the very capable
Melinda Doolittle. Like LaKisha, we recognize genuine talent and we demand
much from her and Melinda. And tonight Melinda did not disappoint. She
entertained us. Why she has not been discovered before American Idol is
beyond me because she has the complete package with pitch, delivery,
breath and stage presence. And what is most refreshing is her humbleness.
Every time after she gives one of her very polished performances, she
looks like she is asking “was it okay? Did you like it?” And the
audience shouts back “YEAH.”
Again the women shined but tomorrow two are leaving. Those two will be
Antonella and Haley. After they are gone, we are down to the final twelve
and then the wood chopping really beings. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s vote
decision and then read my recap that was written just for you.
