American Idol - “Chop, Whack, Chop, Whack”  3/9/07

American Idol, March 8, 2006

By Marcus

Across the vast American landscape, millions of votes were cast determining who of the remaining 8 men and who of the remaining 8 women would make the final dozen. The votes have been counted and the decision cast in bronze. Okay, it was actually written on paper, but bronze has a better tone……And without further dragging out those decisions, these are the singers who were told to exit off the stage, pack their suitcases, and head back home because you just weren’t good enough for Hollywood. And they are:

Jared Cotter, Antonella Barba, Sabrina Sloan, and Sundance Head.

Jared’s departure was predicted and was not a surprise. He is a good looking man and with some serious vocal training and direction, we might actually hear from him again. But he has to really decide to make the sacrifices to be a singer. Can he do that? Can he forsake everything to make his dream come true? I think he has the inner determination to capture and then to own his dream. Keep on, Jared, keep on.

Antonella just isn’t a great singer. She is a good singer but the difference between good and great is like the distance from the north to the south rims of the Grand Canyon. I hope that she can find her direction and I hope, sincerely hope, that she will evidence her self-worth and personal integrity and say “no” to any Playboy magazine offers. I am serious about that prospect being dangled in front of her. Say “no.”

I was surprised that Sabrina left before Haley Scarnato. But both of them are much weaker singers than the rest of the women and Sabrina’s departure is not an upset. I think that she may have a singing career with a cruise line and hawking CD between sets. But as for the Hollywood big time….sorry, it just won’t happen.

Then there were only two standing and hoping for that last empty seat for the final twelve. Sundance standing next to Sanjaya Malakar. One of them is a gifted singer, the other isn’t. One has raw natural talent that makes us notice his voice, his soul and feel his excitement. The other has my mother’s hair style. One could sell CD’s and pack a theatre. The other could sell hair products. One was sent home and one was given a seat in the final twelve. How and why Sanjaya is with the latter group and how and why Sundance is with the former group is absolutely ridiculous. This is a singing talent show. Sundance has the talent and Sanjaya doesn’t. It is that simple. And I am perplexed and upset about this decision. Some things just don’t make sense.
