American Idol - Ten Singers Singing  3/28/07

American Idol, March 27, 2006

By Marcus

We are down to the top ten singers with five men and five women battling for the American Idol crown. Tonight we will hopefully witness the talent that each possesses and also make better voting decisions. After all, it is your vote that counts. And keeping that in mind, we need to vote for the best singers and thus eliminate the wanna-bees. And to assist in that decision, here is my recap….

First up was the normally amazing Lakisha Jones. But tonight she really didn’t set us on fire. Her background music was overpowering even for her dominant voice. And at times she appeared a little shaky. We expect perfect performances from this women but she wasn’t as entertaining as in previous shows. What happened? Stage jitters? A tiny dash of complacency? Come on, Lakisha, you can do so much better.

Second up was “never turn down a donut” Chris Sligh. He still hasn’t learned a thing about stage presence. And his vocals were not exciting but rather off beat. And his ending was not just flat, it entirely missed the musical notes. I think that Chris, based on tonight’s performance, is in trouble.

And then Gina Glocksen brought us back into the competition with a fantastic performance. When she allows herself to be swept up in the music and when she hits those big notes like a cannon blast, it is as if we are riding that river with her and crashing through the waves in sure delight. She was spot on.

I get confused whenever Sanjaya Malakar swishes on stage. I can never get pass the initial impression that he is here for a hair stylist competition instead of a singing competition. Tonight, his hair looked like something procreated by a Spartan War Helmet and a gigantic wooly caterpillar. I think it would have great for dusting those hard to read corners spots in the living room. Oh, I forget, this is about singing. Okay, let me think about his singing……

Haley Scarnato’s soft voice reminds of a gentle summer rain that kind of settles the pollen and refreshes the air. And like those showers, we enjoy them but really don’t remember them that well.

Even though wearing his watch cap did not distract us from the vocal abilities of Phil Stacey, he just didn’t capture us. He came close but he failed to hold our attention and interest. He needs to get excited about his singing so we can get excited about him.

Melinda Doolittle again had an exciting night. She takes vocal risks and hammers them down like a roofing nail gun. She commands the stage and yet makes her entire performance so very believable that it looks simple. She is a true talent.

Eighth up was Black Lewis. In his performance tonight, his limited range was very evident. He does a good job with what he has, but it was not a great job. It was kind of like listening to a cruise ship feature singer closing down the night’s show. A pleasant evening but nothing more than that.

Jordin Sparks lived up to her last name. She skipped and strutted her way across the stage with song, dance, and more importantly, entertainment. She is aiming to win this competition and tonight she had the entire audience snapping and clapping.

Last up was Chris Richardson. Chris just kind of walks out on stage as if he walking to a bus stop. There is no excitement. It is just like catching a bus and if we miss it, there is another one in 10 minutes. He had a boring performance and a flat ending.

So, another American Idol night is history. Who won? Who lost? You make that decision by voting. And tomorrow we will tally your votes and you can then read my recap written just for you.
