Crowe Convinced Drug Smuggler Will Go Home
5/30/05
Russell
Crowe is convinced his efforts to fight for convicted drug smuggler
Schappelle Corby's transfer back to Australia from Bali, Indonesia won't
be wasted.
Corby
broke down and sobbed in court late last week (ends27MAY05) when she was
sentenced to a 20-year prison sentence for smuggling marijuana into
Indonesia last year (04). Her mother and older sister attended the court
hearing in Bali and hit the headlines when they screamed the verdict was
"unjust" as Corby was led away by police.
Crowe
has been publicly calling for the Australian government to intervene for
much of this year (05), and now admits he's happy that the authorities are
doing what they can to get beautician Corby, who at one point was facing
death by a firing squad, back home. He says, "By our law, she
wouldn't be facing the type of sentence that she's facing. "I think
there's been a lot of effort made on her behalf by a lot of people, so
hopefully it comes out the right way." |
