After a devastating house fire left Beverly Turner and her adopted
children from Irvington, NJ homeless, Ty and the gang renovate their
burned down home in just seven days -- and the biggest residential build
yet! The Season Finale of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" will
air in two back-to-back episodes, SUNDAY, MAY 21 (7:00-8:00 &
8:00-9:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.
Told she could never have children of her own, Beverly Turner looked
into adoption. Now, at age 54, she has been a special mom to 18 special
needs children -- despite having myasthenia gravis, a neuromuscular
disease. Raising children who suffer from bi-polar disorder, autism and
blindness isn't easy, but Beverly feels honored to have the opportunity.
She knows that most of these kids came from homes where they were abused
or neglected, and was happy to provide them with a loving home.
Beverly's life would take yet another challenging turn on September 9,
2005: Instead of waking up to a house filled with love and laughter, the
Turner family awoke to smoke and fire caused by faulty electrical wiring.
Suddenly a single mother and her then nine special needs children were
homeless.
Beverly's insurance policy was only enough to cover the mortgage on the
house, with no money leftover for the Turners to rebuild. After the fire,
the Red Cross put the family up in a hotel for three days, then a neighbor
let them stay with her for another six weeks, until finally they moved
into Beverly's mother's house, where they now reside. Three of the Turners
sleep in the basement, while others sleep on couches and a bed.
Seeing an article in the local paper on the Turners and their fire,
about one hundred anonymous community members, including the Mayor of
Irvington, NJ clipped the article and sent it in to "Extreme
Makeover: Home Edition," hoping the design team could help! And now
that the smoke has cleared, "EM: HE" will answer the community's
call and head to Irvington to help this very deserving mom and her special
family.
While the "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" design team,
contractors and hundreds of workers, local builder Edgewood Properties and
Century 21 Construction and volunteers are transforming the Turners' house
into a dream home in a remarkable seven days, the family will go on
vacation to Arizona. In addition, singer Enrique Iglesias performs and
Jason Kidd of the NJ Nets stops by to welcome the family back home at the
reveal of their new house.
The design team for this episode of "Extreme Makeover: Home
Edition" features Ty Pennington, Paul DiMeo, Michael Moloney, Eduardo
Xol and Tanya McQueen.
The series is produced by Endemol USA, a division of Endemol Holding.
It's executive-produced by Tom Forman and co-executive produced by Denise
Cramsey. David Goldberg is the president of Endemol USA.
"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" is broadcast with Spanish
subtitles via secondary closed captioning. This program carries a TV-PG
