The first three songs were
selected by the star maker himself, Clive Davis, who has made dreams come
true for over forty years. And you can bet your entire year’s gasoline
budget that each of the three hopefuls want to produce with Clive. So, how
did they do? Here is my recap, song by song:
Elliott’s “Open Arms” was as refreshing as an uncorked bottle
of
Sonoma
Valley
summer wine. It was delightful, tasty, and full of flavors. Okay, a little
weak at the end, but until then he was spot on. He has finally found a
level of professionalism and self-confidence that has been eluding him for
weeks.
And then Katharine sang “I Believe I Can Fly.” Well, she
flapped her wings as she tottered to the nest’s edge, but she could not
make that leap of faith. She stayed safe in her nest. Safe but not flying
and not entertaining. Could she recover with song number two?
Taylor
’s “Dancing in the Dark” finally stripped away his wedding style
pranks and antics and allowed us to finally see his talent. And even his
dance with Paula only added to his natural ability to entertain. Well
done,
Taylor
.
For the next three songs, the three judges make the picks. Paula
selected “What You Won’t Do For Love” for Elliott. It was okay but
not in the same league as his first song. He was relaxed and attentive,
but his performance was certainly not memorable.
Simon selected “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” for Katharine and
she outshined the rainbow itself. She has found the true meaning of singer
as a performer instead of singing for family and friends. We were
enchanted and well rewarded. She left Judy Garland’s style and found her
own groove. With her sparkling piercing eyes and wet lipped smile, she has
the entire package and is ready for stardom.
Randy selected “You Are So Beautiful” for
Taylor
. Well, I will put this as gently as I can, it was plain ugly. Lost and
swallowed words, grimaced facial movements and an overall appearance of
anguish added to his discomfort.
Finally, the last three songs were hand-picked by the contestants
themselves. Here was their final opportunity to have total and complete
control over what they performed. They needed to select what may be
considered as their signature song. A song that will make them remembered
and wanted and loved by the audience. Well, how did they do? Did they make
the right selection and did they sing it with every beat of their hearts?
Elliott started off with “I Believe To My Soul.”
His performance reminded me of a backyard picnic. The steaks were
grilled a little too long cooking out most of the juices. The wine was
flat and it rained. Elliott, you failed to deliver the meal.
Katharine sang “I Ain’t Got Nothing But The Blues.” For me,
the blues are about life, the hard daily life that grinds out the pleasure
and the hopes likes waves crashing on a reef. She over sang it. She tried
to hard. She was not comfortable and neither were we with her performance.
She didn’t sing the blues, she sang grays and dark browns.
And then we have the Wayne Newton of the wedding singers. That is,
Taylor
singing “Try a Little Tenderness.” His voice was as was shallow as a
stagnant pond. His range is limited as a par three golf course and how he
has remained on this show for so long is numbing.
Okay, three up and three to be voted upon by you, the American
fans. Do the right thing and think before you vote. Ask this “for whom
would I pay $250 a ticket?”
