Hang on tight for a rough ride because tonight is the night of the winner and the loser. Will it be the Court Dancing Jester Taylor ? Or will it be Katharine with the Champagne Smile?       We started with the voices of thousands from auditions across the nation. Each contestant had their very own dream of stardom. And now we have trimmed that vast field down to these two talented performers. Who wants it most? Who will “wow” us with charm? Who has that special unique talent? Will one of them give us such a memorable performance that it will drive us like a whirlwind to make the call in votes? Who will possess the “it” factor?

What happens tonight is important. It is important because dreamers can actually have their dreams actualized. A dream can be more than just a fanciful wish. Any of us can wish. Any of us can have an aspiration. And any of us can dream. But tonight we will watch two dreamers strive to make their dreams become real. And a realized dream, a single solitary realized dream is often the very best that our lives will ever experience. So tonight we wish both Taylor and Katharine this: “make your dream come true.”

            Now here is my recap:

Katharine started the show with “Black Horse” backed by the two talented chair drummers. She sang that song with ownership and with a sense of being in control. She loosened up a little bit more and we were treated to her sexy style of excitement.

Dressed in a purple grape jam jacket, Taylor first song, “Living For The City,” brought down the house with his enthusiasm but only serves to mask this singer’s lack of range and lack of abilities. He entertained us with his first song, but he is no idol.

Tears freely flowed with absolute amazement as Katharine’s second song showed us the depth of her talent. Initially singing accapella “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” she captured our attention and when the instruments started their accompaniment, she just got better and better. This woman has such an emotional range of singing abilities that it is as if we are watching in total wonder a soaring eagle far overhead.

Taylor ’s second song was “Levon.” It was a nasal effort. His usual abundance of confidence was absent. It was not a good representation of this particular song. “Leave On” should have us going full throttle with the refrain, but with his take of it, we were hoping that it would quickly end. And this makes me think “why is Taylor here instead of Chris?”

Katharine’s third and final song is her first single, “My Destiny.” She has the tendency to have a weak introduction but she definitely shows us that she not only owns the song, but loves it as well. Katherine is everyone’s daughter, sister, and lover. She has the ability to fulfill her destiny as the American Idol. But her second song, “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” was her evening’s powerhouse.

Like Katharine, Taylor ’s third song was his first single, “Do I Make You Proud.” And like Katharine, he also had trouble with his introduction as it was barely audible. But he recovered with his usual confidence and left us wanting more.

So there you have it. Two finalists and both are gifted. But how to make the decision to crown one or the other “American Idol.” Here is my suggestion…..think about them individually making and selling their first CD with variety of songs. Think of all that time you would spend listening from the first song through the last. Now with that in mind, which of these two singers would keep your attention throughout the CD?

I suggest that it would not be Taylor . He is a good time fellow, back slapping, dancing and telling jokes. But he does not have the musical vocal range when compared to Katharine. Katharine’s range of emotions, of power, of connectedness with her audience would keep your attention from the first song’s note until the last song’s ending.

Yes. Katharine will be the American Idol.
