Once again the promise of
stardom mixed with vaudeville and a little dash of smoke and mirrors has
captured the American heart. Millions of people and even more millions of
votes were cast for tonight’s crowned “American Idol.” Yes, we had
no recount and no hanging chads. We didn’t have to petition the Supreme
Court. Because?
Because Americans have been
heard.
But before we explore that decision, let’s dance back into time
to March when we started with twelve hopefuls, each trying their best to
impress the judges and the public.
I thought it might be
interesting to award special “Crowns” for various achievements by the
ten who exited the stage and walked the long pathway back home.
“The Comfortability Crown” is bestowed upon Mandisa. She is a
big-sized woman who feels comfortable with herself and has a full voice to
match her figure. When I hear her sing, I see greatness and power. And
more than that, I want to hear more and more of her songs.
“The Overcoming Crown” is bestowed upon Elliott. Elliott has a
hearing impairment that may have made less confident souls not even
attempt to sing for a living. But Elliott has that confidence and he sings
wonderfully.
“The Smoldering Eyes Crown” is bestowed upon Ace. He melted
female hearts across the land and I am sure that he will remain “hot.”
Oh, here is a friendly word of caution to the parents…..when the Ace
cruises into your town, lock up your daughters.
“The Hard Rocker Crown” is bestowed upon Chris. He has the
package of a major rock star with full powered rockets blasting. Had this
been a contest for “American Rock Star” he would have owned the stage
like Donald Trump. There is no stopping you, Chris. So brother, we all say
“rock on.”
“The Country Kinfolk Crown” is bestowed upon Bucky. He will be
heading to
Nashville
and twang with the best of them singing ‘bout pickup trucks, late lonely
nights at bowery bars, and a runaway torn eared dog.
“The Scrawny Chicken Crown” is bestowed upon Kevin. How he ever
made it to the top twelve out of 300,000 auditions is an unending mystery,
kind of like what is really lurking in the Loch Ness.
But I guess the younger kids found him adorable.
“The
Roller Skating Waitress Crown” is bestowed upon Kellie. With an absent
mother, an incarcerated father, a humble loving grandfather, and
mischievous playful dog Comet, her story is ready for a movie producer.
And Kellie, don’t be bashful to pass on the escargot. Or if needed,
simply ask for Ketchup.
“The
Hair Style of the Moment Crown” is bestowed upon
Paris
. This remarkable young talent wows us with the width of her singing
abilities and amuses us with her normal day-to-day Minnie Mouse voice.
Paris
, the country loves you. You have brightened our lives like the night’s
golden hue glow from the
Eiffel
Tower
. Keep on changing your hair, but continue your singing.
“The
Olive Oil Throat Cure Crown” is bestowed upon Melissa. Even though her
home remedy did not help her stay longer, she has talent to continue
entertaining us.
“The
Singer Who Was Gone Too Soon Crown” goes to Lisa. As the youngest
contestant, she stood shoulder to shoulder with the very best. And in fact
she is among the best of this year’s finalists.
So there
it is, “Marcus’ Uncrowned Crowns.”
But who
won tonight? Who received the most votes to be crowned “American
Idol?”
America
voted and the 2006 American Idol is Taylor Hicks. Yes, the bar singing
dancer beat out the lovely and talented Katharine McPhee. I am not
particularly thrilled about this. He is flash with shinny shoes and ashen
thick jowls. His vocal depth is likened to a raindrop. I think that he
will have the staying power of a camera flash. But nonetheless, the votes
were counted and he was the winner. And will undoubtedly make CDs and lots
of money.
But
what of Katharine? She is a singer, an entertainer, a gifted beautiful
performer with a bright
future. She has the full emotional range to carry us into the clouds and
then back to earth as gently as a fallen feather. She is my winner. She is
my American Idol.
