“Four Singers Singing”
Tonight we heard from the remaining four contestants and the pressure
was big time especially for Blake Lewis. Blake is the last man standing,
ahhh, singing that is. And he is facing three formidable challengers. We
have Melinda Doolittle who brings to the stage her many years of
professional back-up singing, a working knowledge of stage craft and a
seeming relaxed humble manner of relating to the audience.
We have LaKisha Jones who has a full volume voice that shakes the
ceiling rafters. She is also very accepting of her physique and knows how
to show off certain of her full womanly attributes. Lastly we have this
amazing seventeen year old Jordin Sparks. When she sings and performs, it
is mind numbing to think that she is such a total talent wrapped into a
young person’s body and mind. Perhaps we are in reality witnessing a
reincarnation of a 1920s blues/gospel/swing singer?
Poor Blake. He and the rest of the male singers are simply out-gunned
and out-performed by this season’s women singers. Tonight he has to be
perfect. From the first sound to the very last note, he has to be perfect.
And perfect is not good enough unless he demonstrates skilled stage work
to keep the audience wanting more. Will he do it? Well, let’s do a recap
of tonight’s performance and your votes will be the judge. And by the
way, all the songs were originally by Barry Gibb who was the guest coach.
First up was Melinda Doolittle singing “Love You Inside And Out.”
Her singing was not particularly exceptional. She was solid with her
vocals, but just didn’t really leave us wanting more. Let’s hope she
redeems herself on her second song. Yup, that’s right. All four
contestants will sing two songs.
Next up was Blake Lewis. His beat-boxing style didn’t save his poor
rendition of “You Should Be Dancing.” It was very dated and his soft
vocal echo was distracting and mechanical.
Then LaKisha Jones sang “Staying Alive.” Her song did indeed keep
us alive but she kind of swallowed her ending and at times her paced
slowed to the point where a medical Code Blue was practically needed.
After the first three performances, Jordin Sparks hit a grand slam with
“To Love Somebody.” Not just because her vocals were perfect, but
because she was able to tell us that not only did she feel the meaning of
the words but she also meant what she sang.
Melinda came back with “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart.” Her intro
was weak and it seemed that for the first time on stage, she doubted her
abilities. Perhaps the intense heat of the competition is melting away at
her confidence. Yet by the end of the song, she was back into form.
Blake returned to the stage singing “This Is Where I Came In.” It
was a nicely tight performance but his continued beat-box style gets stale
like yesterday’s donut.
“Run To Me” was Lakisha’s second song of the evening. She sang
this ballad like the gentle summer rain. But was it memorable? She tried
to make it so by belting out a few lyrics but she literally became hoarse
on the last two words! She may be in trouble.
Jordin ended the evening with “A Woman In Love.” With that
rendition, she has elevated herself as the contestant to beat. Both of her
performances far distanced the others that there is little doubt that she
will be back.
So who is in trouble? Blake and LaKisha. And who will be voted out? I
predict that it will be Blake due to his limited l beat-boxing appeal
style of singing and when he is stacked against the other three, he falls
short.
Return here tomorrow evening for the recap of YOUR vote.
