Winslet Donates Libel Proceeds to Charity
5/15/07
Actress Kate Winslet has donated the #3,000 ($6,000) she was awarded in
a magazine libel case earlier this year (07) to an eating disorder
charity.
The Titanic star, 31, won the lawsuit against Britain's Grazia magazine
at London's High Court in March, after the publication wrongly claimed she
had visited a diet doctor - suggesting Winslet was a hypocrite for seeking
professional help about her weight when she has openly criticized the
'size zero' culture.
The magazine was forced to publish an apology, stating the actress had
visited the doctor with a neck problem.
Winslet has once again shown her disdain at Hollywood's obsession with
extreme dieting by dividing her proceeds between three eating disorder
charities, one of which is the Norfolk, England-based Beat.
Mary George of Beat says, "Kate said at the time that she would
donate her winnings to an eating disorder charity and that is what she has
done.
"I think she was inundated by charities asking for help. We were
informed last week the money would be split between three eating disorder
charities and we were thrilled to be one of them.
"This is a very thoughtful way of highlighting the issue."
