“Three Singers Singing”
By Marcus
Tonight we will hear from the three remaining contestants. And the one
who absolutely needs to wow us is Blake Lewis. His Beatbox style has
limited appeal and he has to perform well beyond just making sounds while
demonstrating his knotted rhythm. The other contender who needs to be more
focused is Melinda Doolittle. This seasoned professional background singer
easily was the finest female vocalist in the initial weeks of the Idol
countdown. But she slipped last week and that gave a clear edge to the
teenage singing sensation, Jordin Sparks.
Tonight is a make or break evening and the pressure is more intense
than ever. Each sang three songs: one chosen by the judges, one by the
producers, and then one of their own choosing.
So, let’s begin the recap….
First up was Jordin singing Simon’s selection of “Wishing On A
Star.” It was a solid performance, maybe a little too much jazz sound
and she was wearing a very boring baby doll high waist dress that did
nothing for her figure. Also, she kind of stood right in front of the mike
as if her lips were glued to it. Thus, no stage command.
Blake sang Paula’s selection of “Roxanne.” It was a perfect fit
for his personality and allowed him to become totally at ease with the
audience. Well done, Blake.
Melinda sang Randy’s selection of “I Believe In You And Me.” She
sang it with passion and finally we felt that she really understood the
song and what it meant. Yet she had a little trouble with some high notes
but overall, a good performance.
The producers selected “She Works Hard For The Money” for Jordin.
This time, she sparkled. She owned that stage and made her presentation
special with her seductive growl vocals.
Blake sang the producers selection “This Love.” His Latin flavor
and dance seemed a trifle too staged and his whole arrangement did not
flow that well. And he again quickly resorted to his standard Beatbox
style. I guess it works for him and he will stay with it like sticky glue.
It does get old quickly, however.
For Melinda the producers selected “Nutbush City Limits.” She took
their challenge and rode that stallion like a seasoned Western cowgirl and
roped herself a perfect 10. It was brilliant and it demonstrated her
amazing range of talent, especially compared to Blake’s redundant style.
Jordin’s personal selection was “I Who Have Nothing.” She gave us
an exciting performance. She flooded the theater with an emotional sense
of really connecting with the song. She is definitely in this contest to
win.
Blake selected “When I Get You Alone.” He continues to be the
weakest of the remaining three singers. His manic style tires instead of
exciting us. And of course he again depended upon another Beatbox garble.
Melinda closed out tonight’s program with her selection “I’m A
Woman.” And what a woman she is. She has an incredible wide range of
vocal abilities that are hard to find anywhere in today’s market. She
was tonight’s solid winner.
So, there you have it. Three singers singing three songs each for a
total of nine songs. This is the question---what songs do you remember?
Answer that and you will know for whom to vote.
Who is going home? My prediction: adios, Blake.
Return here tomorrow night for the vote decision and my recap written
just for you.
