Here we are at the final singing contest for Blake
Lewis and Jordin
Sparks. It is an amazing accomplishment for these two talented
performers. When you consider that tens of thousands tried out for the
limited spots, these two are considered by the voters to be the best of
all. Who will win the crown of American Idol? Will it be Blake the Beatbox
Kid, or will it be Jordin the Singing Teen Superstar?
I continue to testify that Blake’s range and repertoire are very
limited. He has just one style and once you hear it, that is all you will
ever hear. That is why it is so difficult to understand why he beat out
Melinda Doolittle for his spot in the final. And since he did beat her,
Jordin may be in danger. Jordin has a delightful freshness that we need in
the music business. And she has the looks and the vocal range to launch
her into stardom. Jordin, like Melinda, is a vocalist in the full sense of
the word. She has repeatedly proven that she can sing just about anything
and I am certain that if required, she could also rip out some beatbox.
Tonight we heard three songs by both of them and then the public will
vote.
To help you make that decision, here is my recap just for you.
First up was Blake with “You Give Love A Bad Name.” It was his very
predictable beatbox static seasoned with some original dance steps. It was
not spectacular.
Then Jordin followed with “Fighter.” It was a fantastic display of
her talent and vocal range. Yet, she seemed to be glued to the mike
instead of prancing about the stage to the song’s strong rhythm.
Blake returned with “She Will Be Loved.” This time the beatbox echo
was absent. But at times he sang it through his nose, he missed the high
notes by at least two inches and his ending was lost in a gasp. He failed
to impress us and he may have sealed his fate on being runner up.
Jordin stole the stage with “A Broken Wing.” Her personalization of
this soft ballad had us floating high in the sky on soft cumulous clouds.
It was as if our fears and worries were abated and we were safe in her
vocal arms.
Returning to the stage for his third and last song, Blake sang the show’s
song winner’s “This Is My Now.” He needed a big comeback with this
song but he started like spongy pudding with some minimal improvement as
his performance progressed. But it was obvious that this song and its
lyrics were not his style and he was clearly not connected to the song.
And as a result, neither were we. As for the ending, it was plain as
yesterday’s rice pudding.
Jordin was also compelled to sing “This Is My Now.” But whereas
Blake struck out, Jordin made this song her song and hammered a homerun.
She found the song’s essence, connected to it and made it her song. This
is real talent and she has it.
Okay America, you have four hours to cast your vote. And tomorrow we
will learn who you have selected as the American Idol. And return here for
my final recap written just for you.
