Mindy McCready in Tears as She Faces Oprah Winfrey's Truth  11/4/05

Troubled country star Mindy McCready broke down in tears during a recent taping of Oprah Winfrey's TV talk show, when she tried to persuade the singer to leave her abusive boyfriend.

McCready has attempted suicide twice in the past two months after discovering she's pregnant with estranged boyfriend William McKnight's child. McKnight is facing charges of attempted murder and is awaiting trial after allegedly beating McCready and attempting to strangle her in what she claims was a drug-fuelled rage in May (05). And after playing tapes of her past police calls, following alleged beatings by McKnight, and telling McCready, "You are messed up," Winfrey called on psychologist Dr Robin Smith to help the singer see why she needs to walk away from her relationship with the father of her child.

Smith told the country star she was in "deadly denial," adding, "You're sitting here right now trying to hold onto a dream." McCready accepted she was in denial, sobbing, "Nothing in my life is going right, right now and there's got to be a reason for that. I think that God is trying to get my attention to tell me that this is going to end very, very badly if I don't walk away from it."

McCready went on to shock her father TIM, who was in the studio audience, by confessing she met up with McKnight recently, but didn't want to go into details because the meeting, staged in a bid to see if McKnight wanted to be involved with their unborn baby, violated a court order that stipulated McKnight had to stay away from her.

Her devastated father said, "Only a parent can know the pain to see their child abused and hurt like she has been. She has a real thing with denial." Dr Smith concluded the hour-long special, which aired in America yesterday (03NOV05), by telling McCready, "You must go and get help."
