Johnny Depp Thankful to be Alive  11/22/05

Hollywood star Johnny Depp is thankful he didn't die of an overdose during his drug-fuelled wild years.

The Charlie and the Chocolate Factory star was so intimidated by his celebrity status during his early movie career, he turned to drink and illegal drugs to block out his unhappiness.

The 42-year-old says, "For a number of years I self-medicated because I couldn't quite figure it out.

"I thought a simple life was an impossibility. It flipped me out.

"It was a weird period. There were times when it was a wonder I survived."
