Britney Spears Files for Divorce  11/8/06

Pop star Britney Spears has filed for divorce from husband Kevin Federline.

The Toxic star filed legal papers yesterday (07NOV06) in Los Angeles County Superior Court citing "irreconcilable differences".

In her petition, Spears asks for both legal and physical custody of the couple's two children, one-year-old Sean Preston and two-month old Jayden James, with Federline getting visitation rights.

According to news website TMZ, the couple, who married in October 2004, has an iron-clad pre-nuptial agreement.

Spears is waiving her right to spousal support and is asking the judge to make each party pay their own attorney's fees.

She gives the date of separation as Monday (06NOV06), the same day Spears revealed her new post-baby look on David Letterman's talk show.

Sources tell TMZ there was no single reason behind Britney's decision to divorce, but rather "a string of events".

The pop star has hired powerhouse celebrity divorce attorney Laura Wasser, who has represented several celebrity clients including Angelina Jolie, Nick Lachey and Kiefer Sutherland.
