The smell of gunpowder and the dripping of sweat - TAR Episode 2 Summary  10/5/05

By Marcus

Tonight, the nine teams started in the peaceful bucolic fields of Lancaster and ended in a bloody rutted battlefield. Before their time warp to the Civil War, they scampered up the lonely shoe house stairs. Then they both drove and literally ran through Washington DC capitol looking for a specific reflecting pool. Receiving a mysterious leather briefcase through the window of a darkened stretched limousine and then using secret password phrases to determine friend from foe, they completed a covert exchange of identical briefcases for their next clue.

From the bustle and politics of Washington, to the country back roads. But this time there was no peaceful time of reflection to chipping birds and sea blue silo silhouettes. But instead, there was war.

The Northern Army and the Southern Army met on a farm field. The cannons were belching death while muskets snapping lead balls. Calvary officers on jittery horses were trying to maintain order in the heat of battle but the sounds of battle drown out their shouts as the two opposing sides repeatedly charged against their fellow countrymen.

All this was part of tonight's Amazing Family Race to the second pit stop.

The Weaver family came together as the widow mother stepped into and felt more confident in her role as sole family parent. Her children also notice her self-assurance. Filling 20 oil lamps in record time, they finished first and were awarded a Bermuda Vacation.

The Linz siblings worked well as a team toting the battle wounded and they came in second.

The "never have a quiet moment" Godlewski sisters successfully carried the wounded and ended in third. I wonder, do they continue to talk when asleep?

The Schroeder family also completed their oil lamps and finished fourth.

Father and three son in-laws Aiello family worked hard together. The boys really encouraged both emotionally as well as physically the father. I think that their desire to learn more about one another is developing. They finished fifth.

Papa Bransen had a tough time keeping up with his daughters. He was gasping for air almost through the entire program. Without the encouragement of his daughters, I think he would have collapsed on the battlefield and he would have needed a stretcher for himself. They finished sixth.

Worried about being shot in the battle, little Carissa Gaghan and family worked together lugging five soldiers to safety. They finished seventh.

Never at a lost to criticize and belittle one another, the Paolo family argued about the lack of gas, the inability to read a map, and probably whether or not water is wet. They argued and fought among themselves, and finished eighth.

Although this second pit stop was a tease "the last team MAY BE eliminated," there was no reprieve for the last place Roger family. I am worried about this family. Nineteen old Brock is trying to find his own adulthood. Dad is realizing that his son is becoming a man but meanwhile, older daughter Brittany is kind of left aside. There was shared blame for wrong directions and missing turns, all of which led to their last place finished. How they resolved that might make a determination about how their family evolves.

With eight family teams left, this race is wide open. But please, let's leave the guns unloaded.
