Fantasia
Signs Cause a Fuss in Her Hometown
10/19/05
The Mayor of High Point, North Carolina is sticking with her decision
to honor hometown heroine Fantasia Barrino on road signs, despite protests
from locals.
Becky Smothers was among the officials who agreed to honor the
21-year-old American Idol winner by adding the words 'Home of Fantasia
Barrino' to welcome signs on the edge of town.
But, after reading her new autobiography, locals fear they've made a
mistake in honoring someone who has no love for the town where she grew
up.
In Life in Not a Fairy Tale, Barrino portrays the town negatively,
dubbing it "the Land of the Dead."
But Smothers isn't interested in the petty squabbling: "There's a
lot more serious things happening right now than Fantasia's signs."
