Britney Spears knew `N SYNC star Lance Bass was gay before anyone else - because he `came out' to her first.

Bass admits he told his pal about his gay secret shortly after she wed Jason Alexander in 2004 - more than two years before he went public.

Bass reveals, "I felt bad for her. I knew she was about to go through a lot of crap. I felt the need to share something.

"So I sat her on my bed, and I'm like, `Well, I'm gay!'"

Bass has tried to get in touch with Spears to lend her moral support during her child custody battle - but the pop superstar hasn't returned his calls.

Bass was concerned about his old friend and neighbor, who used to date his 'N Sync band mate Justin Timberlake, he decided to contact her.

He tells American magazine GQ, "I tried. She's my neighbor in Beverly Hills.

She lives next door. I tried to get in touch with her - I wanted to be that friend to help her.

"I don't think she's having any of her old friends anymore."
