"Paint, feathers, and elbows" -  Survivor Summary for September 29  9/30/05

By Marcus

The jungle mist shrouds and swirls about the ancient pyramids. The Howler Monkey screeches to find a mate. Or perhaps he is delineating his territory. He is, however, completely oblivious to the human survivors as they face another day. They are seeking a million dollars, a book deal, talk shows and a new life. He is seeking the more basics of life. A companion. Some sustaining food and safety from hungry predators. And although he may be enjoying zookeeper Cindy’s interpretation of his behaviors, he probably cannot wait until all these bipedal intruders leave his forest.

First observation. During the “blind man walk”, Pigskin Gary’s barking quarterback commands were very definitive and his crew responded well to his directions. But they simply did not work well as a team in the actual tent construction. I think they have yet to select a leader. Perhaps because such early leadership may end in an overthrow? Leaders are needed, but become easy targets as the game continues.

Second observation. Doorman Judd has some issues. Did you notice his repeated boast that excepting his wife and employer, he listened to no one? I wonder if he has some worries about his own sense of worth. Perhaps some childhood fear of displaying weakness?  Big boys don’t cry. Yup, they just develop ulcers.

Third observation. Police sergeant Amy is a trooper. Her face suggests hardened maturity. Injured and in pain, yet she continued to push herself. This woman does not quit. She plays hard. Although hurt, she sucks up what life deals to her. This is someone you can count upon as backup. I just hope that her ankle recovers. I am going to enjoy watching her and I predict that she will become a leader.

Fourth observation: Veteran Stephanie is a whiner. She was trying to direct her team in the ball court game. But rather than look into herself for their loss, she blames those around her. She has lost her standing as a coach. She is this weeks “grumbling complainer.”

Fifth observation. Who can take a licking and keep on kicking?  Hard headed Danni. This former Miss Kansas was clobbered in the head at least thrice,      yet she continued the effort. Did she complain? No. She rubbed the booboo and never looked back. Beauty, smarts and toughness. She will be a force in this game.

Sixth observation: The show’s editors are giving less time to nurse Margaret. Yet we are seeing her evolve into the campground boss. Like a mother hen gathering and clucking at her chicks, the chicks are slowly resenting her constant instruction. When her team loses immunity, she better look out as she will be on the chopping block.

Seventh observation: Guatemala . The temperature is a broiling 114 degrees. The humidity is thicker than a milkshake. The sun fries flesh and bakes brains without mercy. The toll of exhaustion was evident at the ballgame. These survivors need to lookout for one another because heat exhaustion and heat stroke are serious. And jumping into the lake like human crock bait isn’t exactly a smart thing to do. Did you notice that only the men did this?  What is about male hormones that cause such behaviors as highway motorcycling without a helmet? Dangling tender morsels of legs and arms for hungry crocks and then sloughing off the danger as “living on the edge”?

Final observation: Make-up artist Brianna just was not designed for life in the jungle where both two-legged and four-legged creatures devour one another. She never really was able to produce for her tribe. The previously mentioned heat and humidity not only robbed her of strength, but I think it robbed her of her desire to win.

Tikal tidbit:  all the ball courts are aligned north and south. The sides were sloped to cause the ball to bounce back into the playing area. Fans would stand on the top flat platforms to observe and cheer.
