Rapper Kanye West has accused MTV of using Britney Spears' lackluster comeback performance as a ratings ploy.

Spears kicked off proceedings at the Las Vegas based MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday (09Sep07) with her new single Gimme More.

And while her performance was savaged by critics, it proved to a be a ratings winner: 7.1 million people watched the show in the U.S. - a 23 per cent increase from last year (06).

But West is fuming because he believes they exploited the singer to make the awards show a ratings success.

He says, "Man, they were trying to get ratings. They knew she wasn't ready and they exploited her.

"They exploited her, they played me and I really don't mess with MTV."

West has already vowed to boycott cable channel MTV after missing out on five awards at the show.
