About Steven Spielberg
Steven
Allan Spielberg was born December 18, 1946 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He began
experimenting with short films while in elementary school, winning a prize for
"Escape to Nowhere" at age 13. Turned down twice by USC's film school,
he attended California State Long Beach but did not complete a degree. Spielberg
began his professional directing career in TV, making his full-length film debut
with 1971's "Duel." In 1975, Spielberg hit the big time with
"Jaws," widely credited as the beginning of the summer blockbuster
tradition. Now one of the most sought after directors in Hollywood, Spielberg
continued his success with "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" in
1977, a film that earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best
Director. Spielberg has one child from his marriage to actress Amy Irving in the
1980s. In 1991 he married actress Kate Capshaw. The couple have five children
together. In 2005 he directed War
of the Worlds and Munich.
