About Usher
Usher
Raymond IV was born October 14, 1978 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He began singing
in the church choir at the age of six under the direction of his mother,
Jonnetta Patton. A single mom, Jonnetta raised Usher and his younger brother,
James, in Chattanooga before relocating her family to Atlanta when Usher was
twelve. With Jonnetta's guidance, Usher performed at local talent events. It was
in this venue in 1992 that Usher gained the notice of Bryant Reid, brother of
Antonio "LA" Reid, famed R&B producer and co-president of LaFace
Records. An audition with LA was arranged, and a record deal was soon in the
works. At the age of fourteen, Usher found himself recording his debut album.
After graduating from North Springs high school, Usher recorded his second
album. The single "You Make Me Wanna" skyrocketed to number 2 on
Billboard's R&B charts, second only to the sentimental favorite of the time,
Elton John's Candle in the Wind. Usher's third album, "8701," earned
the artist two Grammy awards. He was chosen as one of Teen People Magazine's
"21 Hottest Stars Under 21." Usher's three-year relationship with Rozanda "Chilli" Thomas of TLC ended in 2004. In 2005 he
appeared in the movie In The
Mix. Shakira and Usher will join The
Voice as judges for Season 4.
